The gap between filling and crown
A very large composite flexes under load and eventually fails at the margins.

A crown solves that but requires cutting the tooth down all the way round. An inlay or onlay sits in between: it restores the biting surface precisely while leaving the sound walls of the tooth intact.
How they are made
The prepared tooth is scanned, the restoration designed on screen and milled from a ceramic block, then bonded in.

Fit is measured in microns rather than judged by eye.
How long they last
Well beyond a large composite, and comparable to a crown — with meaningfully more of your own tooth still underneath, which matters if the tooth ever needs further work.
